01 The Big Picture (Master)

Description

This module provides a comprehensive overview of the film and television production process, starting with the foundational role of the script. In the first module, students explore how a screenplay serves as the blueprint for the project, shaping the director’s vision and guiding key creative decisions. Topics include the visual translation of scenes, collaboration with department heads (“Keys”), and the iterative process of rewrites that continue through production and post-production, sometimes altering the story dramatically.

The content then transitions to the practical, on-the-ground operations of a film production unit. Students learn how this temporary “business” executes the pre-approved production plan through collaboration, hierarchical management, and problem-solving. Real-world dynamics like casting, unions, and guilds are introduced, illustrating the complex coordination required to bring a project to life. By the end, participants gain a clear understanding of how creative vision and logistical execution converge to deliver large-scale productions.
